Superbad Will Go Down As The Best Movie Of The 2000s Era
So here I was laying on the couch on a Tuesday night when Superbad pops up on the TV. It had been a decent amount of time since I previously watched it so I buckled in and had my Tuesday night planned for me. That’s when it hit me.
Now I should preface this by saying I don’t really stray too far away from comedies, so when I say this I’m talking pretty much just about comedies, sports and some dramas. I’m nowhere near as smart as the guys from Lights, Camera, Barstool (@LightCameraPod). But I felt pretty strong in my take here without it being too hot takey.
Superbad has it all. You have Emma Stone, Michael Cera and Jonah Hill all before they completely blew up and became a bit too big for their parts. You have Bill Hader and Seth Rogen playing the perfect secondary characters as the cops. You have the memorable characters with McLovin especially.
Then just think about the memorable lines:
‘The funny thing about my back, it’s located on my cock.’
‘What’s it like to have two guns? It’s like having two cocks.’
‘How old are you? Old enough. Old enough for what? To party.’
‘Muhammed is the most commonly used name on Earth. Read a fucking book for once.’
‘He’s the fastest kid alive.’
‘You know when you hear girls say ‘Ah man, I was so shit-faced last night, I shouldn’t have fucked that guy?’ We could be that mistake!’
That’s just a small sample size of what’s out there too. I mean look at some of these scenes:
It’s one of the most rewatchable movies because of all that. The jokes never get old, it’s more than held up in terms of how funny the jokes land 11 years later. It’s absolutely perfect. You have the love interest for all 3 main characters, but it’s never dominating the movie like you saw with the end of Wedding Crashers.
It’s also one of those movies that everyone knows the feeling to. Everyone knows what it’s like trying to sneak around and get alcohol when you’re underage. You remember trying to set up a party at your house or a friend’s house when their parents were out of town. Hell, you remember your first fake ID. Shout out Waukesha, Wisconsin, which was my hometown with a birthday of May 9, 1985. It was no McLovin but it did the trick.
So with that said I know there will be some people arguing about this. Remember, this is strictly comedies, which is the best movies for me. It’s all opinion unless you disagree with me. But, in the 2000s era I’d go with:
1. Superbad
2. Old School
3. Super Troopers
4. Step Brothers
5. Wedding Crashers
As the top-5 comedies for me. I’d be willing to listen to arguments for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Grandma’s Boy, EuroTrip, Road Trip, Zoolander and Anchorman for one of the last two spots. Just an absolutely loaded era of comedies.
